Week 12: Story, Logic, Design Document

I had chosen a game style of fantasy for our final game design, and I shared some ideas for game development class such as fantasy elements. Later, I gave some suggestion for character's description, because if we are going to start design, we need a lot of details about the characters, such as their personality, what style of their cloth, may be classical or fashionable and so on. Actually, I like the story. It has good background and story line with many different characters in different scenes or places we can imagine. But there are still problems, for example like how is Alex going to save Elva's father? No just pass though the universe or space... What is the process? I was confused. The age of the main character, I am not sure if he should be 17, looks so young, 19 or 20 would be much butter. Maybe we can write some details of the whole game not just the introduction, because I want it to have some tussle, may be. Before I was thinking about an element of Chinese mythic animals may be can added into story, but we chose the game happen in London, so my idea was not used. Sometimes, linking different culture together is more interesting rather than just one culture by itself. For the name of game, may be I like “Steam Punk” more than “Steam Shift”, because first one has a strong feeling of that period, mechanism and fantasy. Jason gave us the mark of story is 8, in my option, maybe changing some detail will look much butter, but I like the story 70%. Actually, I want to give 7.5 to story.

The logic, I didn't give ideas for this part, because this group always writing on their own. I heard about the completed logic tree two times in our class meeting, and saw the logic map just once. I cannot get more information from the logic tree. Although we had discussion in the class many times, I don't have much impression for the logic. In my opinion, this part can be successful if written by no more than one person. At the same time, they have a good organization that connects each part of the story, but if they can improve some parts of the logic, may be can have a good result in the end. In my opinion, the logic is a hard one to think and write. We need to know how the logic relates all story, characters and places and so on. Some times, if the logic is written by just one or two people might be easier, because different people have different ideas, it is hard to communicate each other and unify all ideas. In this week, Jason gave us 7 markers for the logic, it is very lucky. At the same time, I am not sure this mark, because I cannot share easily my idea into this group, the problem is not too many people were concerned with thinking or writing of the logic. But this group is very hard working, it is good, I want to give them 6.5 marks.

Design document, we have a lot of things to do, including characters, time machine, interface, environment, building and so on. We have many people to draw different parts such as concept drawing. In the beginning, a problem for the characters was that we did not know any details for different characters, just imagined the style of them by ourselves. When we tell the story group that we need characters list, they wrote for us, it was good. So we could follow the list to design characters. It was easy to understand what personalities of them. But we didn't have enough time to do more color paintings for characters. On the other hand, when we almost finish all characters and get to choose final drawings. Some people did not like Alex's hair, the reason was because it's too short, should be longer than this style, but I do not think so, I like the short one… -.- For machines design, I would like to do the airship. A problem I am worry about is that whether the key locations can be finished in time, because now all people have changed mind that the building or street will be drawn by us, too much work need to do, hopefully we can finish on time. I add this group to design main and minor/supporting characters including: Alexander Cross, The Man in Black, the “artist”, Leah Adams, the temple leader, Nancy, Bernard gallery cleaner, tailor, homeless man and so on. Cliff and I are designing the logo for the game, both logos look very nice, and using a Victorian style. I am surprise that Jason gave us 8 marks for design document, but we need to continue to develop our drawings, I will give us 7.5.

Any way, next week, I want every one finish our design and we need one more week to perfect the final game. Good Luck!!!

Week 9 Minor/Supporting Characters



Here has some supporting characters in the game, I was try to draw different style of them ^_^
eg: Elijah Sims, he is an asylum friend, he seems sane.
